Your weekly bulletin from the team at Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!

Solomon Principal Newsletter: September 9, 2016
Dear Parents and Community:

The first week of school is always such an exciting time of the year. The teachers, staff, and I spend the summer months learning and planning (and relaxing a little bit too!), and this week we start to see the pay-off. Your children bring passion and joy every day, and we as a staff feed on that. It challenges us to do our best daily.

I am enjoying getting to know our 30 new kindergarten students, as well as the 20 or so new students in the remaining grades. We are so glad to have you as a part of our community, and we are honored that you have entrusted us to support your child in meeting his or her learning goals.

Chicago Enrichment Programs
I am very happy to announce that we have a new before and after school care provider, Chicago Enrichment Programs. This fully licensed and ensured CPS vendor is the creation of Mr. Jacob Glickman, who many of you know from his before and after school care with another provider. We are excited to have "Mr. Jake" and his company partnering with Solomon for childcare and enrichment opportunities.

Please see the flier below for information about the program (cost, times, how to sign up, etc.). Programming officially starts this coming Monday, September 12.

Volunteer Opportunity: Solomon Community Work Day
We need volunteers for our very first Community Work Day at Solomon, scheduled for Saturday, September 17, from 8am to 1pm. We have a number of school-wide projects that we could use some volunteer assistance with--building a shed to store our PTO materials, replacing the fabric on the chairs in our library, and decorating the outside planters, among other things. Adults and children are welcome to assist, and we would love to have a big turnout. Please respond to the survey below so that I can anticipate how many volunteers to expect (and have enough coffee!).

Share the news with your friends in the community!
Fonseca Martial Arts
If you haven't done so already, please register for our martial arts classes offered by Fonseca. The first class is next Tuesday, September 13. Classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:45-8:45am in our gymnasium. Please enter through the main entrance on Hamlin. Email Fonseca at info@fonsecamartialarts.com with any questions or just show up at the first session to register!

A couple of highlights to share about upcoming PTO events:

  • Our first PTO meeting of the year is scheduled for Wednesday, September 14, at 9:15am in our school lunchroom. We scheduled both daytime and evening meetings this year to accommodate everyone. Please view the Solomon Community Calendar on our website to see the full slate of PTO meetings for the year. An agenda will be shared on the website 24 hours before the meeting, and school-wide priorities and needs are addressed by our committed group of parents, community members, and teachers. We hope to see you there!

  • Our first restaurant giveback is scheduled at Chipotle (5961 N. Lincoln) for this Tuesday, September 13, from 4-8pm. You will need to show the flier (paper copies went home today and you can use the digital one here as well). By showing the flier, 50% of the sales proceeds will be donated to Solomon Elementary. I'll see you there!

  • Our next restaurant giveback is scheduled at Candlelight Chicago (7452 N. Western) on October 16.

  • Car decals will be delivered soon. Be the envy of the neighborhood with a Solomon Cougar on your car! Sign up for the PTO using the attached form.

Beginning of the School Year Reminders
  • Over 99% of our school budget goes towards staff salaries, which means that some curricular and technology costs need to be met through fee payment. Fees range by classroom from $79 to $136, depending on the grade level and whether it is a new or continuing student. These fees subsidize workbooks students use daily, toner for printer, and technology repair, among other things. Thanks for your assistance in the timely paying of fees.

  • I offer a friendly reminder for everyone to be good neighbors on the roads outside of Solomon. It can be hectic picking up or dropping off 360 students daily, so please be aware of students in the vicinity and courteous towards our fellow drivers.

  • As part of our work in building student leadership at the school, 8th grade volunteers are partnering with 5th graders for Safety Patrol this year. They help guide traffic around the school and work together to make our school a safe place. Thank you, Mr. Martin, for coordinating.

  • For students that ride the school buses daily, thank you to all parents for your patience this week as new bus companies drive their new routes for the first time. If you ever have any concern about transportation, please be sure to call our main office and the assigned bus company to get information and provide feedback.

Student Teachers at Solomon
We are excited to have four student teachers working with us this year for the first semester. Please welcome to Solomon:
  • Christopher Birt (Northeastern Illinois University): Physical Education
  • Christi Gleeson (Northeastern Illinois University): 1st Grade
  • Angela Jaramillo (Northeastern Illinois University): Grades 7-8 Special Education (Room 122)
  • Batsheva Nochomovitz (Hebrew Theological College): Grades 7-8 Special Education (Room 118)
Don't miss these upcoming events!
September 13: Local School Council meeting, 5:30-6:30pm in the school library.

September 20: Curriculum Night, 6-8pm in gymnasium and classrooms. Meet your child's teachers, learn about instructional and homework plans for the school year, and learn how you can partner with each teacher to ensure your child's success this year. This year we are asking that this is child-free event so that teachers and parents can have rich discussions about the school year. Thanks for your cooperation.

September 27: Peterson Park Improvement Association State of the Community meeting, 7-9pm in the gymnasium. Hear from our local representatives and officials about the state of affairs in Peterson Park, and meet your fellow community members.

Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (September 2016 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!
