The last of three "Back to School" and start of the year bulletins from Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!

Solomon Principal Newsletter: September 2, 2016
We at Solomon have had an exciting past three days getting the year started for teachers and staff. As a staff, we've engaged in learning around our curriculum mapping process, deepened our knowledge of supporting students in academic and social-emotional need, and shared strategies for how we can be intentional in our focus on supporting social-emotional growth for both our students and our staff.

Of course, the best part of the week was being able to see over 100 students and their families today for our back to school picnic and early bird day. Thank you to everyone who came, ate ice cream, dropped off supplies, paid fees, and shared their stories from the summer and enthusiasm about the start of the year. Once again, thank you to our PTO for hosting the ice cream social (and for keeping the ice cream from melting!).
Before/After School Programming Update
As I shared with everyone this week, we struggled to get enough families to sign up for before or after school programming through Right At School. Even with yesterday's appeal, we would only have 4 to 8 students for an after school session and fewer than 4 for before school sessions. This was not enough to sustain a program with Right At School, which requires a class of 12-15 students, and they called impacted families to let them know this afternoon.

As a parent who also relies on before and after school care, I know how challenging this is for families. I am reaching out to other potential options and am hopeful that we will be able to provide a long-term solution for before and after school care at Solomon. As I am able to identify a suitable alternative, I will let the community know. At this point, I do not have a time frame for when an alternative would be available.

In order to help out those families who signed up for Right At School and do not have another option at this late date, I personally volunteer to watch your children between 7:30-9am and 4-6pm for this first week of school. It is only a short-term solution, but it gives the school, as well as families, the time to identify alternatives. If you are interested in taking advantage of this offer, you will need to contact me directly at 773-805-0844 or crgamble@cps.edu.

I am biased, but I think that we have the best PTO in the city. It is a committed group of parents that work tirelessly to support our school and community in so many different ways.

Please consider joining our PTO this year for a $15 fee per family. Included in this year's fee, for the first time, is a Solomon car decal (to show your school pride) and a Solomon PTO Directory (to have the phone numbers and email addresses of the coolest people in the neighborhood!) The fee also helps to support our programming at Solomon. Come to our Curriculum Night on September 20 to hear from the PTO leadership about this year's priorities and fun events being planned.

PTO helps generate funds for Solomon in many ways, including our restaurant give-back nights. Our first one for the year is at Chipotle (5961 N. Lincoln) between 4-8pm on September 13. You will need to show the flier to have a portion of your sale go back to Solomon. Events like these can raise hundreds of dollars for the school, so we hope you can dine at Chipotle that evening. The next night will be at Candlelight Chicago (7452 N. Western) on October 16. Both restaurants have supported Solomon this year in other ways--Chipotle provided chips and salsa for today's picnic, and Candlelight provided many pizzas at our International Night last June. Please support them!

Solomon Community Work Day
We are excited to host our first Community Work Day on September 17 from 8am-1pm. Parents, students, and community members are invited to come to Solomon for the morning to work on various school improvement projects around the building. If you are interested in attending, please complete the survey below so that we can get an idea of how many people we can expect (and how much coffee to get!). Thanks!
First Day Drop Off "Coffee and Kleenex" Social
Whether they are tears of sadness or joy, dropping off the kids on the first day of school is sure to be an emotional morning. Join other parents in our library from 9-10am on Tuesday, September 6, for some coffee and pastries. Meet other parents in a social environment, say hi to the principal, sign up for our PTO, and share the Kleenex box. All are welcome!

Don't miss these upcoming events!
More important upcoming events at Solomon....

September 13: Local School Council meeting, 5:30-6:30pm in the school library.

September 20: Curriculum Night, 6-8pm in gymnasium and classrooms. Meet your child's teachers, learn about instructional and homework plans for the school year, and learn how you can partner with each teacher to ensure your child's success this year. This year we are asking that this is child-free event so that teachers and parents can have rich discussions about the school year. Thanks for your cooperation.

September 27: Peterson Park Improvement Association State of the Community meeting, 7-9pm in the gymnasium. Hear from our local representatives and officials about the state of affairs in Peterson Park, and meet your fellow community members.

Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (September 2016 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!

Last but not least, with materials and forms going home next week, information about school fees will be shared with parents. Over 99% of our school budget goes towards staff salaries, which means that some curricular and technology costs need to be met through fee payment. Fees range by classroom from $79 to $136, depending on the grade level and whether it is a new or continuing student. These fees subsidize workbooks students use daily, toner for printer, and technology repair, among other things. Thanks for your assistance in the timely paying of fees.

If you know of someone who hasn't received this email but would like to be on the distribution list, fill out this form.

Enjoy your weekend,
