Your weekly bulletin from the team at Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!

Solomon Principal Newsletter: October 7, 2016
Dear Parents and Community:

Even with the uncertainty of next week, there is a lot to celebrate at Solomon. See below for some great pictures that highlight our strengths and areas that we want to go!

I am proud to announce that Solomon has, once again, achieved a Level 1+ rating, the highest school rating in Chicago Public Schools. We earn that rating through our NWEA MAP scores, ACCESS scores, attendance rate, and results of the My Voice, My School survey. This is the result of the hard work of everyone at Solomon--students, teachers, staff, parents, and administration. Thank you to everyone for making and keeping Solomon among the best neighborhood elementary schools in the city.

For more information about the School Quality Rating Policy (SQRP), click here to read about how it is calculated. A formal print-out with a break down of each component school will be shared and discussed at our next LSC meeting, October 11 (pending the CTU strike outcome).

CTU Strike Update
Letters from the district regarding the potential strike on October 11 went home this week, and there have not been any district updates since then. To highlight a few things from the letter:
  • It is advised that students either stay home or attend free programming at the Chicago Park District or Chicago Public Library.
  • All schools will be open but will only have a skeletal staff (principal, custodians, and some aides) and will not have academic programming.
  • All before and after school programming is cancelled during the strike.
  • Visit cps.edu/strikeplan for information on what options for your child are available.
  • Keep an eye out for an email from me, an update on our website, and local news programs for updates. An update may not be available until late on Monday, so at this point, plan as though the strike will begin on Tuesday.
Speaking of attendance: September 2016 attendance was 96.18% school-wide (an increase of 0.61% from last year at the same time). 5th grade had the highest attendance for the month at 98.59% Way to go, everyone!
Before and After School Care: Chicago Enrichment Programs
The website for Chicago Enrichment Programs is live, and it is the best place to get information about the fees and programming for our students. parents can pay through the website, as it finally has the link to pay.  Parents can register simply by sending an email to chicagoenrichmentprograms@gmail.com and  supplying their student's name. Find out more information here.

Fabiana Glazer from GoldMind Arts (from the mural last year!) will be doing a Halloween art workshop creating projects to bring home.  This will be run on Oct 25 and 26 from 4:00 - 5:00, $10 per day per child.

Celebrations from this week...
Ms. Sartain and Ms. Gleeson (1st grade) continue to encourage students to have me kiss a pig as a book-reading incentive. Here, students wrote about their hopes and wishes for the year--that I am included in them is very sweet!
Exciting to finally have our first Chromebook cart for student usage in the classrooms. We are excited to use them in a number of different ways, and I'll be sure to share what that looks like.
With the anxiety of this week, we always can use a reminder about the power of our work. Thanks to a special 8th grade student for this reminder!
Questions or concerns? Please feel free to reach me at any time--email me at crgamble@cps.edu or call me at (773) 534-5226 (school) or (773) 805-0844 (cell).
