Solomon Principal Newsletter: October 14, 2016
Dear Parents and Community Members--

I was relieved early Tuesday morning when we all found out that the strike was not going to happen. As parent of 2 CPS students, in addition to serving as principal, I was just as anxious as you were. Thank you for your patience. I also want to publicly acknowledge our teachers and staff as well. Solomon is only bricks and mortar without their daily commitment to our students; they make it a learning community where all students are valued, encouraged, challenged, and protected. I am fortunate to work with such dedicated staff, and collectively we are excited and ready for the remainder of the school year.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities
Please print out this form, complete, and return back to the main office. We are looking for all sorts of different ways that parents can contribute to the Solomon experience.

We are also looking for parent volunteers able to assist with two new after-school clubs: a musical performance ensemble, led by Ms. Stirling, and an inter-mural sports program for students in grades 5-8. If you are interested, please fill out the survey below or contact me or Ms. Stirling directly.

Pennies Fundraiser
We are starting a new pennies fundraiser this year for new, environmentally-friendly drinking fountains at Solomon this year. Ask your child--they know the drinking fountains to avoid! By replacing the drinking fountains in the east and west wings of the school, students will travel less to get their water and fill up their water bottles with ease.

We will be collecting pennies and loose change in the main office all year so that we can purchase these drinking fountains, with a goal of having them installed by the end of the year. When you are in the main office, be sure to drop in a penny (or 2!) for good luck and fresh water.
CPS Healthy Snack Policy

WIth Halloween coming up and birthdays to celebrate, I wanted to take the opportunity to remind all parents about our district's snack policies:

"Birthday parties and holiday celebrations at school provide a unique opportunity to make healthy eating fun and exciting to students. The CPS Healthy Snack and Beverage Policy limits the use of unhealthy foods for student celebrations. Specifically, the policy sets the following standards:

  • Dining staff should never be requested or prevented from preparing meals except in the case of student field trips.
  • Schools are allowed up to two school-wide unhealthy food celebrations that must be submitted to the Network Chief and the Office of Student Health Wellness
  • Classroom celebrations should focus on fun not food.

You can do your part by encouraging your child’s school to celebrate with non-food activities or healthy foods. Popular celebration ideas include:

  • Creating a crown, badge or sash for your child to wear on his/her birthday
  • Bringing in your child’s favorite book to read to the class.
  • Celebrating special days with a festive dance party
  • Take a field trip to a local farmer’s market where children can meet farmers and learn about local fruits and vegetables."

A separate memo will come out next week regarding Halloween practices at Solomon, which promise to be festive.

Before and After-School Programming
Fabiana Glazer from GoldMind Arts (from the mural last year!) will be doing a Halloween art workshop creating projects to bring home.  This will run on October 25 and 26 from 4:00 - 5:00, $10 per day per child. See the flier for more information.

Registration for other before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming.
Congrats to our 2016-2017 Student Council representatives, who will be meeting on a regular basis on Tuesdays after school to identify student needs, plan school-wide events, and develop their leadership voices.

School Fees
Thank you to all parents that have paid the school fees for this year. These fees are used to pay for the curricular materials that your students use every day, so these fees are vital to our functioning as a school. I would like to recognize Room 102 (2nd grade) for having 100% of fees paid--thank you for supporting our work with your children. Other classes range between 8 (!) and 88% of fees paid so far. If you haven't paid your child(ren)'s fees for this year, please do so. If you need to set up a payment plan, please see Ms. Sandlass in the main office.

Celebrations from this week...
The garden grown by 117, under the leadership of Ms. Howsam and our community gardener extraordinaire Ms. Kirn, right before the harvest. One month ago students planted the seeds...
...And this week they ate the fruits (or salad) of their labor. A nutritious home-grown snack of kale, lettuce, and radishes was enjoyed by all.
Our 4th graders practicing their rendition of "Go Cubs Go"--see the video on the school's Twitter account @PrincipalGamble.
