Solomon Principal Newsletter: November 4, 2016
Dear Parents and Community Members--

The first of our two yearly conference days is coming up on Wednesday, November 9. It is a day of non-attendance for students. All teachers will have time available between 11am-2:30pm and 3:15-6pm. We hope to have 100% of our parents meet with teachers that day so that we can best partner with our parents to support all of our students' needs. We will also have staff available to help parents register for Parent Portal, if needed. 

Teachers are also using lunch time that day to order from our friends at Backyard Grill (6355 N. Pulaski), where a portion of sales goes towards our Solomon PTO when you say the magic words--"Solomon!"
Scholastic Book Fair: November 9-15
Our annual book fair event coincides with the Report Card Pick-up Day. On November 9, the book fair will be open from 12 to 6pm; on November 10, 14, and 15, the book fair will be open daily from 9:15 to 3pm. The bookstore is always open at www.scholastic.com/bf/solomonelementaryschool. Solomon benefits from the book fair in getting a portion of the proceeds to build our own classroom libraries, as well as using this as an opportunity for teachers to talk about "good fit" books with students. Students and staff alike get excited about picking out new books, and with a number of days off in November, this is a good time to curl up with a new favorite. As an incentive, if the fair generates over $5000 in sales, our Junior Book Crew has a new shenanigan for me--dressing like a pirate. It should be less painful than duct tape. Thanks in advance to our coordinators of the fair, Ms. McReynolds and Ms. Tamborino, all the parent volunteers that help out, and the Junior Book Crew for promoting the fair to their peers. 
Red Ribbon Spirit Week
Congratulations to our 4th graders in Ms. Luciano's class for winning the Door Decoration contest. Way to take a stand and be creative at the same time!
New CPS Elementary School Sports Program: Registration for the Winter Basketball (Boys and Girls) will be starting next week. Information is still being shared with schools, including the locations of the Saturday game sites, and will share that information as soon as I get it.  Registration information will come home with students next week. 

  • Eligibility: 5th-8th grade students who have met the district’s physical examination requirement and academic, attendance and behavior requirement set by student’s school
  • Winter 2017 Sport Offerings: Girls and Boys Basketball
  • Winter Season Practice Start Date: Week of January 9, 2017
  • 1st Game of Winter Season:  Saturday January 14, 2017
  • Other sports to be included in this program in Spring 2016 or Fall 2017 may include: Cross Country, Track, Floor Hockey, Soccer, Spirit/Cheer, and Volleyball
Halloween Highlights
You may have missed that many of our teachers and staff "haunted" the students on Monday with a "thrilling" dance performance. Click the link below to see the performance. "America's Got Talent", here we come!

Reminder: Fonseca Martial Arts is cancelled for Tuesday, November 8, due to Solomon being an election site. An alternate date will be scheduled and shared with participants. 
Attention: 3rd-8th grade Drama
A flier went home to all students in grades 3-8 this week about our after-school drama program, which will start January 10. If you are interested, please see the attached flier and return the completed form to your child's homeroom teacher. This year, the musical is "The Trials of Alice in Wonderland", with a final performance on March 4. Reminder: Visual Arts instruction with Go Get Your Smock begins on Monday and Tuesday next week. Students will receive 10 weeks of visual arts instruction during the 2nd quarter. 
Parent Volunteer Opportunities
Please print out this form, complete, and return back to the main office. We are looking for all sorts of different ways that parents can contribute to the Solomon experience. 

We are also looking for parent volunteers able to assist with two new after-school clubs: a musical performance ensemble, led by Ms. Stirling, and an inter-mural sports program for students in grades 5-8. If you are interested, please fill out the survey below or contact me or Ms. Stirling directly. 


Prospective Parent Tours: Our first tour for families interested in attending Solomon will be on November 10 at 9:30am. Interested families should meet in the main office. Additional tours will be held on December 1, January 26, February 23, March 23, and April 27. 
Before and After-School Programming
Registration for other before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming. Be on the lookout for some information about upcoming Lego programming!
From Ms. Reis: Please bring in travel-sized toiletries for our veterans that are hospitalized. Donations can be dropped off in the boxes located right outside the main office. Also, as a reminder, we will be hosting our annual Veterans' Remembrance Day Ceremony at Solomon on Wednesday, November 16. We welcome all veterans and their families at Solomon that morning.

A couple of highlights to share about upcoming PTO events:
  • The due date for sending Art to Remember order forms back to Solomon has been extended to Tuesday, November 8. Orders will not be accepted after that time. 

  • Our Soiree committee will be having its first meeting at Panera (6059 N. Lincoln) on Monday, November 7, at 7pm. If you are interested in attending or would like more information, please contact our chair, Yvonne Lemperis, at lemperis@yahoo.com. 

  • The date of our next restaurant giveback at Candlelite Chicago (7452 N. Western) has been changed to November 20.  We hope to see you there!

  • Our next meeting has been moved back one day to November 17 at 9:15am in our school library.

Comprehensive Health Instruction at Solomon: We will once again be providing Comprehensive Health instruction, which includes sexual health, to targeted grades at Solomon this year, building off of our successful launch last year. Letters with information about the content of the instruction will be sent home to parents via kid mail during the 2nd or 3rd quarters, depending on the classroom. Classrooms that will receive this instruction this year include 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 117, and 122. Please see me with any questions or concerns. 
Pennies Fundraiser
We are starting a new pennies fundraiser this year for new, environmentally-friendly drinking fountains at Solomon this year. Ask your child--they know the drinking fountains to avoid! By replacing the drinking fountains in the east and west wings of the school, students will travel less to get their water and fill up their water bottles with ease.

We will be collecting pennies and loose change in the main office all year so that we can purchase these drinking fountains, with a goal of having them installed by the end of the year. When you are in the main office, be sure to drop in a penny (or 2!) for good luck and fresh water.
