Solomon Principal Newsletter: November 11, 2016
Dear Parents and Community Members--

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the three-day weekend. Starting this week, I'm going to use the newsletter to highlight some of the different grants that teachers at Solomon are pursuing. I'll highlight a different grant each week, so feel free to visit the links and contribute if you like. Some grants, such as one from Ms. Stirling earlier this year to improve her classroom space, have already been assisted with the help of Solomon parents. If you are interested, please pass the information along!

Ms. Ptak has created a Donors Choose page with the purpose of building a library of indestructible books to be used throughout the school but especially for our cluster program students and early childhood. By doing this we are supporting emerging literacy practices for all of our students. If you are interested, visit her page here. Thank you for your support!
Scholastic Book Fair: 2 more days to go!!!
Our annual book fair event continues on November 14 and 15, open daily from 9:15 to 3pm. The bookstore is always open at www.scholastic.com/bf/solomonelementaryschool. Solomon benefits from the book fair in getting a portion of the proceeds to build our own classroom libraries, as well as using this as an opportunity for teachers to talk about "good fit" books with students. Students and staff alike get excited about picking out new books, and with a number of days off in November, this is a good time to curl up with a new favorite. As an incentive, if the fair generates over $5000 in sales, our Junior Book Crew has a new shenanigan for me--dressing like a pirate. It should be less painful than duct tape. Thanks in advance to our coordinators of the fair, Ms. McReynolds and Ms. Tamborino, all the parent volunteers that help out, and the Junior Book Crew for promoting the fair to their peers. 
New CPS Elementary School Sports Program: Registration for the Winter Basketball (Boys and Girls) started this week, with packets sent home with students on Monday. If you need an additional registration packet, please stop by the main office to pick one up. All interested students must submit their registration information by Wednesday, November 16. 

  • Eligibility: 5th-8th grade students who have met the district’s physical examination requirement and academic, attendance and behavior requirement set by student’s school
  • Winter 2017 Sport Offerings: Girls and Boys Basketball
  • Winter Season Practice Start Date: Week of January 9, 2017
  • 1st Game of Winter Season:  Saturday January 14, 2017
  • Other sports to be included in this program in Spring 2016 or Fall 2017 may include: Cross Country, Track, Floor Hockey, Soccer, Spirit/Cheer, and Volleyball
Reminder: We have our Honor Roll breakfast for all students in grades 3 through 8 that made the 1st Quarter Honor Roll. We invite any parent or family member available to attend our breakfast celebration for the students, which we will host in our gym at 9:15am on Monday, November 14. 
Applications for 2017-2018 School Year

The information below is for families that do not reside in our neighborhood boundaries and would like their child to attend Solomon as a new student starting in the 2017-2018 school year.  

Families that would like to apply for any open seats at Solomon should complete the online or paper application by December 9, 2016, at 11:59 p.m.  This is especially important for siblings, since you must have an application for the child that is not a Solomon student.  Make sure to note on the application that you have a child currently enrolled at Solomon.  

We do not currently know how many seats will be open for next year, but you must have an application on file to be considered. Prospective students are placed in a random list by the Office of Access and Enrollment in CPS. That list is then shared with Solomon in March, and then Ms. Smith and I go down the list until all of the open seats are filled. Due to students moving in and out of the neighborhood, we may be calling families from the list right up until school begins. 


The date of our next prospective parent tour is December 1 at 9:30am.
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!
A big thank you to all of the families that attended our Report Card Pick-up Day this past Wednesday. 98% of our families were in attendance. Instructing our students is a partnership, and I appreciate the efforts of all parents to provide your insight and feedback. 
Before and After-School Programming
Registration for other before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming. Be on the lookout for some information about upcoming Lego programming!

From Ms. Reis: Please bring in travel-sized toiletries for our veterans that are hospitalized. Donations can be dropped off in the boxes located right outside the main office. Also, as a reminder, we will be hosting our annual Veterans' Remembrance Day Ceremony at Solomon on Wednesday, November 16. We welcome all veterans and their families at Solomon that morning.
Lane Tech Computer Science Open House
Lane Tech College Prep is hosting a Computer Science program open house at the school (2501 W. Addison) on Saturday, November 19, from 9-11am. Find out more at the link below, or see the attached flier.

A couple of highlights to share about upcoming PTO events:
  • Congratulations to homerooms 101, 102, 104, 105, 106, 110, 114, 117, 119, and 122 for submitting your 75 Box Tops in October. The out-of-uniform day for those homerooms is Wednesday, November 16. 

  • If you are interested in serving on our Soiree planning committee, please contact our chair, Yvonne Lemperis, at lemperis@yahoo.com. 

  • The date of our next restaurant giveback at Candlelite Chicago (7452 N. Western) has been changed to November 20.  We hope to see you there!

  • Our next meeting has been moved back one day to November 17 at 9:15am in our school library.

Dr. Janice K. Jackson, Chief Education Officer of the district, will be hosting a meeting at Beaubien Elementary (5025 N. Music and Arts News from Ms. Stirling
Hey Solomon Parents! 

Does your 6th, 7th, or 8th grader like rock, hip-hop, beat-boxing, a capella vocals, R&B, Latin, funk, DJ’ing, and other contemporary experimental music?  Applications Now Open: ALT-City New Music Ensemble!

ALT-City New Music is a contemporary music program in its fifth year at CPS. The program is led by seasoned, professional musicians and CPS teachers and will be utilizing the brand new state of the art sound lab recently acquired by Curie Metro High School through generous help from Adidas.  This free Saturday workshop series leads students through making original music, drawing from new and contemporary genres and using a wide range of equipment. All genres welcome, all instruments welcome, self-taught and formally trained musicians all welcome! Students will have an opportunity to compose and perform 
original compositions on stage at the Harris Theatre in Millennium Park May 21st 2017!

Pennies Fundraiser
We are starting a new pennies fundraiser this year for new, environmentally-friendly drinking fountains at Solomon this year. Ask your child--they know the drinking fountains to avoid! By replacing the drinking fountains in the east and west wings of the school, students will travel less to get their water and fill up their water bottles with ease.

We will be collecting pennies and loose change in the main office all year so that we can purchase these drinking fountains, with a goal of having them installed by the end of the year. When you are in the main office, be sure to drop in a penny (or 2!) for good luck and fresh water.
