Dear Parents and Community, 

We are one week away from Spring Break, and as soon as we come back, Report Card Pick-up Day will be right upon us. Teachers have been sending home sign-up sheets for conferences that day, Wednesday, April 19, between 11:00-2:30 and 3:15-6:00pm. Our goal is always to have 100% attendance from parents. An added incentive, beyond getting to speak with your child's teachers, is that we will have an Art Fair from all students. The art displayed will be their work with Go Get Your Smock from earlier this year, sustained by support from the Parent-Teacher Organization. Be sure to check out your child's work, and find the next Picasso among our students! Kudos to our Visual Arts committee, particularly Ms. Shayne and Ms. Tamborino, for their organizational help in getting this ready for April 19. 

News and Updates

 

  • Our second and final Scholastic Book Fair of the year is getting ready to start. The fair at school will be open April 17-21, with before school hours (8:30-9am) on April 18 and 20. The online fair will be open April 7-21, which you can access here. Cash and credit cards are accepted at the school fair, and checks should be made payable to Solomon School, with your child's name and room number included (10.25% sales tax included). Our big incentive for this year's book fair is that the classroom that buys $1000 in books first will go "camping" after-school and into the early evening with Mr. Gamble, with perhaps the help of some special guests. We will even have a "campfire" with s'mores! Good luck to all homerooms, and buy those books!

  • We have a couple of upcoming music celebrations coming up this month. This coming Wednesday (April 5) will be our annual student recital at 10:15 in the gymnasium. We will have limited space available for parents who want to see the performance. Additionally, we will have our dance performance for all students in PK-2nd grade, who have been participating in the Dancing With Class program the past 2 months. The date of the performance is Wednesday, April 26, at 10:30am. Parents are invited to attend to see the funky dance moves. 

  • Thank you, parents and staff, that contributed to Ms. McCarthy's STEAM grant this past week. We are excited to announce that, through a matching grant from Cards Against Humanity, the goal of the drive was achieved. We will be sure to share pictures these materials in action! Congratulations, Ms. McCarthy!
  • Registration for incoming Kindergarten students from the Solomon neighborhood boundaries (click here to see our boundaries) is ongoing in the main office. Please bring your child's birth certificate and 2 proofs of address (no cell phone bills though). Word on the street is that letters to families who applied for schools outside of their attendance boundary will be mailed this coming Monday, so if you applied to Solomon through the regular or sibling preference lottery for your incoming student, you should be hearing very soon. Feel free to call the main office with any questions.

  • See this announcement from the district announcing that NWEA will continue to be the assessment used for selective enrollment admissions, promotion, and the school quality rating for elementary schools during the 2017-2018 school year. 

  • Just a reminder to families that Spring Break begins Friday, April 7, and continues through April 16. The building will be closed during the break. We hope that everyone is able to enjoy time with family and friends during the break. 
My Voice, My School Survey for Parents
The My Voice, My School survey for parents opens up on April 1, and it continues through April 30. The survey can be found at www.cps.edu/parent_survey, where you can access it in multiple languages (including Arabic, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese, among others), and responses are anonymous. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete, and we at Solomon use the results of the survey to help determine our school improvement plans moving forward. Aides will be available to assist you in our computer lab (room 112) during Report Card Pick-up Day as well. Thank you in advance for providing the school with quality feedback!
UPDATE: 5th/6th Girls' Soccer Team

Practices will begin next week, starting Tuesday, April 4, from 4-5:30pm. Practice will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays after school each week, with the exception of Spring Break week (4/7 through 4/16), with the season wrapping up in early June (date TBD, depending on playoffs).

The coach for the team will be Lee Powers, an employee of the Chicago Park District at Hollywood Park. Coach Powers also worked with our 5th/6th Grade Boys’ Basketball team this past winter. He is excited to work with what will be our first soccer team!

The game schedule has not been released yet. All I know at this point is that the following days have been designated for league contests: 4/22, 4/29, 5/6, 5/13, and 5/20. NOTE: It was shared with me late Friday afternoon that there will not be a playoff for 5th/6th Girls' Soccer. As a result, the season will conclude on 5/20.

When the full schedule comes out, along with the location for games, it will be sent home with the girls.

Fonseca Martial Arts registration
The final day for the winter term is next Thursday, April 6. Registration is open for the spring term that starts on Tuesday, April 18, and continues through Thursday, June 15. See the attached flier on registration information for the spring term. Even if you haven't participated before, this is a great program for teaching balance and fitness. All are welcome!

Parent Teacher Organization Updates
Congratulations to Shane D. in 5th grade for winning this year's WJR t-shirt design contest! We are excited to see his work on 400+ students and staff on May 12!

We have one month to go on our shoe drive, and we only need 22 more bags to get to our goal! Matching our goal means $1000 for the school, with additional bags meaning additional $$$. Please bring those new and gently-used shoes to the drop box next to the main office. 

Interested in volunteering for International Night on June 2? We need plenty of help organizing the event, soliciting goods, and staffing the tables the evening of the event. If you noted on the volunteer interest survey at the beginning of the year, we will be reaching out to you; if not, feel free to send Mr. Gamble an email at crgamble@cps.edu or calling the mail office. Thanks!

Our next PTO meeting is April 26 at 9:15am in our lunchroom. This is the last meeting before WJR, so there will be a lot to plan and discuss!

Registration for before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming.

Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
