Solomon Principal Newsletter: March 10, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

I want to congratulate our 8th graders, who have received their high school acceptance letters this week. Students have some time to make some choices between the schools that accepted them, but I am happy to announce that 11 of the 35 students in Room 107 received acceptance letters from the selective enrollment high schools that have testing and grade requirements; these schools include Lane Tech and Whitney Young, among others.  Additional students have been accepted into other selective programs, such as International Baccalaureate programs, Double Honors programs, and the Von Steuben Scholars program, that offer high-quality education for our graduates.

We are so proud of the progress that each student has made, whether he or she has been at Solomon for 9 years or 9 months, and we are excited to see how they make our community proud in the years to come.
News and Updates
  • Thank you to everyone for submitting registration paperwork for the Spring after-school sports programming. I will be reaching out to families via email and kidmail with information about your team(s) next week. In other after-school sports news, congratulations to our Girls on the Run and Heart and Sole teams for a great first week: 37 girls in grades 3-8 are preparing for a 5k race in May with the support of Coaches Kaplan, Tamborino, Richard, and Asimakopoukos. Way to go, girls. I look forward to running with you this spring, too!
  • I will start using this space to get our upcoming out-of-uniform days to parents more efficiently, so we will start with Friday, March 17: For St. Patrick's Day, everyone can show their Irish by wearing green!
  • Have you checked out our online school community calendar on the Solomon website? Of course you have, but just as a reminder: After school practices and events, among many other events, are all listed on the calendar. Want to know when 8th grade graduation is? Does Girls on the Run have practice today? It is all on the calendar!

  • Registration for incoming Kindergarten students from the Solomon neighborhood boundaries (click here to see our boundaries) will start March 28-30 from 9:30-2:30 in the main office. Please bring your child's birth certificate and 2 proofs of address (no cell phone bills though). If you intend to send your child to Solomon for the first time in the 2017-2018 school year and you reside in the neighborhood, please stop by the main office during these times, or call the main office to arrange a different time. Registration for out-of-neighborhood sibling and lottery applicants will take place after Spring Break.

Parent Teacher Organization Updates
As a reminder, the due date for getting your new and gently-used donated shoes to Solomon has been extended to April 30. Please bring those to the drop box next to the main office. With over 50 bags collected so far, we have made it half way to our goal of $1000!

Our next PTO meeting is one of our evening meetings: Wednesday, March 15, at 6pm in our school library. With the Soiree over, we move onto our other big end-of-the-year events to plan, the Walk/Jog/Roll-a-thon and International Night. We hope to see you there!
Community News
A citizenship workshop will be hosted by Congressman Luis Gutierrez this Saturday, March 11th (9am-12pm) at Avondale-Logandale Middle School. Please see the attached flier for more information.

What you may have missed this week...
Students in Room 102 showing off their pandas, with the support of Ms. Chan and our Chinese artist-in-residence program.
Our teachers sharing lessons from their own favorite teachers, all while competing in a mad game of Jenga!
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
Questions or concerns? Please feel free to reach me at any time--email me at crgamble@cps.edu or call me at (773) 534-5226 (school) or (773) 805-0844 (cell).

If you know of someone who hasn't received this email but would like to be on the distribution list, fill out this form.
