Solomon Principal Newsletter: June 9, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

We are excited to add, to our weekly newsletter distribution list, families that will be new to Solomon for the 2017-2018 school year. We welcome you and look forward to seeing you and your child(ren) at school soon! Schedules, meeting agendas, and previous newsletters can always be found at our website, solomon.cps.edu

There are only 7 more days left of school, but they are the busiest 7 days of the school year: 8th grade graduation, luncheons, field trips, picnics, incentive events, and, on the last day, students moving up to their new classroom for the 2017-2018 school year.

News and Updates
  • We are looking for 2 more parents and 1 more community member to join our LSC for the 2017-2018 school year. Please see me if you are interested, or just stop by and say hi when you see me at entry or dismissal. Our LSC is a vital part of our how our school's success, and we are looking for enthusiastic and engaged new members.

  • This past week, there was unfortunately an attempt on Wednesday evening to break into Solomon. No one gained entrance to the school, as all potential entries were secured as normal. That said, especially for those of you living close to the school, please keep an eye out for our school and be sure to call the police if you see anything suspicious taking place on our grounds. Thanks for your help!

  • Be on the lookout in our next newsletter for summer office hours at Solomon. The building will be closed most of the summer due to construction, but I will be sure to share with you when the main office will be open for registration.

  • For those in the neighborhood, I'll share with you a note from Alderman Laurino's newsletter this week regarding an upcoming meeting for Devon Ave. redevelopment:

When: June 14, 6pm
Where: Monastero's Ristorante & Banquets (3935 W. Devon)

More Information:

Monastero's Ristorante & Banquets has announced their closing later this year. They plan to sell their property to the Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church of Chicago for religious assembly.

  • The project requires a zoning change from B1-1 to B1-2, as well as special use approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals for religious assembly and accessory parking.
  • Elim Pentecostal and their development team will present their plans for the site and then answer questions regarding the proposal. All are welcome to attend.
Class Supply Lists for the 2017-2018 School Year

To order next year's school supplies, specific to each classroom, you can submit the paper forms to the main office by June 12. Online orders at www.shopttkits.com will be taken until June 19 (our school account number for online sales is 40823). Kits will be available for pick-up at Solomon the week before school starts in the fall (August 28-30). Limited extra paper copies of the teacher-created supply kits are available in the main office.

Parent Teacher Organization Updates
Our Lou Malnati's PTO restaurant giveback is scheduled for June 12. See the attached flier for details.

One final restaurant giveback has been scheduled for the final day of school, June 20, at King Pho (5414 W. Devon). This one is a Solomon favorite--great Vietnamese-Thai food from a Solomon family (Annabelle L., 6th grade). A portion of the evening's proceeds comes back to our Solomon PTO, and celebrate the end of the year.

Our final PTO meeting of the year is scheduled for Wednesday, June 14, at 9:15am in our student lunchroom. The calendar for next year and an end-of-year recap will be discussed.

Chicago Enrichment Programs
Registration for before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming.
Don't miss these upcoming events!
June 12: 8th grade pinning and class luncheon

June 16: Pre-K picnic at Sauganash Park

June 16: 8th grade Graduation ceremony, 1pm (gymnasium)
Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (June 2017 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!
In case you missed it...
Our PTO really fancied up the joint at our Kindergarten Tea this year! A big thank you to Mrs. Kaplan, Mrs. Rempas, Mrs. Moschopoulos, and Mrs. Clark for hosting the festivities this year.
We hosted our first Volunteer Breakfast on Friday. Over 100 parents and community members that volunteered in some capacity at Solomon this year were invited, as a small token of appreciation for all that they do to make us Solomon. Thanks to the Solomonshire Players, under the direction of Mrs. Stirling, for the accompaniment.
Congratulations to Maetheany B., 5th grade, and her teacher Ms. Chan, for winning the Seal of Biliteracy award this year!
Our students enjoyed DJ Jay Funk at the Student Council spring dance on Friday afternoon. Thank you to Ms. Zachar, Ms. Ptak, and the whole Student Council for making it a special afternoon.
