Solomon Principal Newsletter: June 17, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

While we are reluctant to let them go, we nonetheless wish our retirees nothing but the best as they prepare to leave Solomon. The contributions of Randee Shayne, Joan Jones, Jennifer Johnson, and Debbie Smith go way beyond teaching and supporting our students. They have touched us as co-workers and strengthened our community. Solomon is a better place because of you, and we thank you!

News and Updates

  • Friday's graduation proceedings for our 43 graduates made for a special day. Thank you to the parents, siblings, extended family, and friends that all contributed to their success. Our graduates will be heading off to Lane Tech, Whitney Young, Loyola Academy, Lincoln Park, Senn, Taft, Mather, CICS-Northtown, Amundsen, Northside Learning Center, Vaughn Occupational, Christian Liberty, Maine East, and Niles West.

  • 8th graders are reminded that Monday and Tuesday are still days of attendance at Solomon. Tuesday will be a half-day of attendance for 8th graders that turn in their permission slip to Ms. Reis.

  • Monday is Field Day at Solomon for all students. The weather looks great. Be sure to bring a packed lunch, and come sunscreen-ed up for a fun morning of activity and picnicking outside.

  • We are looking for 2 more parents and 1 more community member to join our LSC for the 2017-2018 school year. Elections for the vacancies will be held at our organizational meeting on July 6 at 9am. Those interested in the position should plan on being in attendance for the election.

  • With construction at Solomon this summer, it will be an active hard hat zone. Access to the main office will be limited during the summer. If you will have a child new to Solomon in 2017-2018 and have not registered, the main office will be open the following Thursdays from 9am-12pm to accommodate all registrants: June 29, July 13, August 3, and August 10. I work all summer, so if there is anything you need, don't hesitate to reach out at crgamble@cps.edu or (773) 534-5226.

  • Fall Sports update: We received an update yesterday regarding CPS fall sports offerings. I am pleased to let everyone know that 5/6th and 7/8th grade Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Volleyball, and Boys Soccer will be available for students. All we will need to do is get enough kids to sign up for a team, and we will start that process in September. Parents, if you are interested in coaching any of these sports, please let me know.

Class Supply Lists for the 2017-2018 School Year

To order next year's school supplies, specific to each classroom, online orders at www.shopttkits.com will be taken until June 19 (our school account number for online sales is 40823). Kits will be available for pick-up at Solomon the week before school starts in the fall (August 28-30).

Parent Teacher Organization Updates
One final restaurant giveback has been scheduled for the final day of school, June 20, at King Pho (5414 W. Devon). This one is a Solomon favorite--great Vietnamese-Thai food from a Solomon family (Annabelle L., 6th grade). A portion of the evening's proceeds comes back to our Solomon PTO, and celebrate the end of the year.

Be on the lookout for our first PTO event of the new school year, our Back-to-School picnic and supply drop-off day on Thursday, August 31.

Also, keep an eye open for information about PTO officer elections when we return in the fall.

Thank you to all of our parent and community volunteers that make our school unique. Have a great summer!

In case you missed it...
Our 8th graders, minutes before they walked the stage on Friday for the graduation ceremony. Congratulations to our 43 graduates!
A big thank you to our 4th graders for buying over $1000 in books at the spring book fair. We had our "camping" incentive with them this week--campground games, s'mores, sleeping bags, and a movie to top it off!
