Solomon Principal Newsletter: January 27, 2017
Dear Parents and Community Members,

While we are busy planning experience learning experiences for your children, a big part of our work every week is to engage in meaningful professional learning as a team. Sometimes the learning is specific to certain grade levels, and other time it is for the whole staff. In alignment with our Continuous Improvement Work Plan, we have worked together to learn more about:
  • student-to-student/peer feedback strategies
  • student literacy and math interventions as a part of our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
  • reviewing beginning of the year and middle of the year assessment data (NWEA, TRC/Dibels) in order to identify trends and develop new areas of instructional focus
I'm also working with a group of principals on the Northwest Side to deepen my learning of primary literacy strategies, including balanced literacy (I did come from the high school world, after all!). Our primary team has been thought partners on our current practices and where to go from here.

Even with the furlough days, which eliminated 4 days of professional learning for our staff over the remainder of the school year, we continue to prioritize our own learning and model the growth mindset for our students. Doing these things gives us the ability to keep pushing our students to new heights.
PTO News and Soiree Updates
Solomon Soiree news to share, as well as a few PTO updates:
  • Today we are 5 weeks out from the Soiree, our annual fundraiser for the parents, teachers, and Solomon community members. The ticket form went home with students on Thursday, and it is attached here as well. Completed forms can be returned to the main office.

  • In terms of donations, we would love to use the Soiree as a way to highlight and promote your business to our school community. Consider donating services from your business to our raffle. Other things you can donate to our raffle for the event: sports memorabilia, tickets to an event, a gift certificate to a restaurant that you love, etc.

  • Please reach out to our committee at solomonsoiree@gmail.com with any questions or requests for more information.
  • Our next PTO meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15, at 9:15am in our school lunchroom.
News and Updates
  • Our next 5th/6th grade Boys Basketball game is tomorrow at 9am vs Jamieson at Mather HS. A new schedule for the season was posted this week and sent home with players. A digital version of the new schedule is available here

  • As I mentioned last week, we are aiming for our year-long goal of 96% attendance at Solomon. We are getting closer to recognizing our winning homerooms for the month of January; homerooms with the highest attendance and the most improved attendance will be the "guardians of the Cougar." As of January 24, Room 110 (3rd grade) is in the lead with 99.0% attendance for the month. Room 114 (6th grade) is only .6% behind, with a few days remaining.

  • Thank you to all that wore their pajamas and sweats today for a cause. Each dollar donated goes towards the purchase of uniforms for our Special Olympics team. Thank you to Ms. Howsam, Ms. Sak, and Ms. Gulino-Bobel for coordinating.
The Solomonshire Players
We are excited to announce a new, no cost, before-school arts enrichment opportunity, led by Ms. Stirling as a result of a grant she secured for our school. The Solomonshire Players is a Renaissance-inspired ensemble of musicians, actors, and dancers. Both students (grades 3-8) and adults (parents and teachers) are welcome to participate. Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, February 7th, and will take place each Tuesday and Friday morning from 8-9am.

For an application to join the players, click here and return to Ms. Stirling as soon as possible. Please email her at hjstirling@cps.edu with any questions.
Candy Grams for Valentine's Day
Each year Ms. Chazdon organizes our Candy Grams for Valentine's Day, where students (and families) can send each other little tokens of their appreciation. I've attached the order form in case you would like to order, and students have received copies of the order form as well. All funds raised from this event supplement our general internal account school funds, which pay for positive behavior and honor roll incentives, as well as supplementing the cost of field trips when needed.
Chicago Enrichment Programs
Registration for before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming. CEP is looking to add more enrichment programming in January, so keep an eye out in the newsletter and their website for updates!
Don't miss these upcoming events!
February 2: Last Day of the 2nd Quarter/1st Semester

February 3: Furlough Day--no school for students or staff

February 20: Presidents' Day--no school for students or staff
Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (January 2017 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!
What you may have missed this week...
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
Questions or concerns? Please feel free to reach me at any time--email me at crgamble@cps.edu or call me at (773) 534-5226 (school) or (773) 805-0844 (cell).

If you know of someone who hasn't received this email but would like to be on the distribution list, fill out this form.

Enjoy your weekend,
