Your weekly bulletin from the team at Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!

Solomon Principal Newsletter: February 3, 2017
Dear Parents and Community Members,

I'm sure like many of you, my thoughts this week have been with many of the families in our community as we learn about changes in national policy. Our neighbors in North Park began the "Hate Has No Home Here" campaign last fall, and I feel that message is even more true today. Please know that all of the staff members at Solomon are all committed to keeping our school and community a safe and welcoming place for all of our students and families. Additionally, we are ready and equipped to help families make connections with local agencies and resources that may be needed as laws change.

Soiree and PTO Updates

Here is the latest Solomon Soiree news to share, as well as a few PTO updates:
  • Today we are 4 weeks out from the Soiree, our annual fundraiser for the parents, teachers, and Solomon community members. Completed ticket forms can be returned to the main office.

  • In terms of donations, we would love to use the Soiree as a way to highlight and promote your business to our school community. Consider donating services from your business to our raffle. Other things you can donate to our raffle for the event: sports memorabilia, tickets to an event, a gift certificate to a restaurant that you love, etc.

  • Starting this week, I will use social media and the morning announcement to get everyone excited about some of the great prizes and experiences you can win.

  • Please reach out to our committee at solomonsoiree@gmail.com with any questions or requests for more information.
  • Our annual shoe drive will continue through March 1. Please bring your gently worn, used, or new shoes to the drop box outside of the main office. Proceeds will be going towards the purchase of two new drinking fountains for the school, the first of which has been installed outside of the main office. Come fill up your water bottle in these new, environmentally-friendly fountains!

  • Our next PTO meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15, at 9:15am in our school lunchroom.

News and Updates
  • Students and staff will be taking the annual My Voice My School 5 Essentials survey, administered by the University of Chicago. The survey opened on Jan. 31, 2017, and the window will close on March 24, 2017. Students in grades 6-8 will complete the survey in the coming weeks. For more information about the survey, visit here.

  • Information was shared with principals this week about spring sports leagues for this year, including soccer and track. Similar to this winter, we will also partner with Hollywood Park to provide after-school soccer instruction for all students in grades 1-8. More information, including how to sign up, will be shared in the coming weeks.

  • Separately, Girls on the Run/Heart and Sole practices begin the week of March 6. It may still be cold out, but we are getting ready to lace up our shoes for some spring activities!

  • Congratulations to the 20+ students, staff, and community members that signed up for the Solomonshire Players with Ms. Stirling. Practices begin this week, starting at 8am, on Tuesdays and Fridays in the lobby with Ms. Stirling.

  • Scheduling note: Please note the correction from the paper calendars sent home this week--the last week of the Hollywood Park basketball practices (as well as the practices for our 5th/6th Boys Basketball team) is the week of February 20-24 (with the last game for the 5th/6th team on February 25). A digital version of the 5th/6th Boys game schedule is available here

The homeroom with the most improved attendance for January was 108AM (the morning Pre-K classroom), improving from 89.7 to 97.5%.

Our overall January attendance was 95.7%, and our year-to-date is 95.4%.Our goal for the year is 96%.

110 and 108AM were recognized on Wednesday as our "guardians of the Cougar" for the month of February. Congratulations!

For some weekend reading on the consequences of missing school, I recommend this article from The Atlantic from this past fall. Enjoy!
Candy Grams for Valentine's Day
We have a few more days for students to purchase Candy Grams for Valentine's Day, so if you haven't purchased yours, you still have until Wednesday, February 8, to order them.

Each year Ms. Chazdon organizes our Candy Grams for Valentine's Day, where students (and families) can send each other little tokens of their appreciation. I've attached the order form in case you would like to order, and students have received copies of the order form as well. All funds raised from this event supplement our general internal account school funds, which pay for positive behavior and honor roll incentives, as well as supplementing the cost of field trips when needed.
Chicago Enrichment Programs
Registration for before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming.

Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (February 2017 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
Questions or concerns? Please feel free to reach me at any time--email me at crgamble@cps.edu or call me at (773) 534-5226 (school) or (773) 805-0844 (cell).

If you know of someone who hasn't received this email but would like to be on the distribution list, fill out this form.
