Your weekly bulletin from the team at Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!

Solomon Principal Newsletter: February 24, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

I want to thank all of our parents, community members, teachers, and staff who attended our Soiree this past Friday at Fairway Banquets in Niles. The totals are still being tallied, which I will share next week. Suffice it to say, though, thanks to your efforts we look to be close to beating last year's event.

An event of this magnitude can't happen without a lot of volunteers behind the scenes, starting with our chairperson, Yvonne Lemperis. I would like to personally thank Yvonne and the following committee members, in no particular order, for all that they did to make the event a success and serve our students: Donna Rempas, Jamie Kaplan, Anne Moschopoulos, Kristen Williams Smith, Dorothy Anderson, Ana Bumbaris, Janel Shepin, Ann Park, Alexa Aguayo, Kristin Smith, Gillian Deppeler, Navdeep Dixit, and Tracy McReynolds.

I'd also like to thank all of our parents, staff, and community members that donated items for our auction and raffle. Once again, thank you for your efforts to help provide quality arts enrichment programming for all of our students.
Soiree and PTO Updates
Just a reminder that our shoe drive continues through March 1, so get those new or gently-used shoes to Solomon by Wednesday. We have raised at least $250 so far, and each bag gets us closer to our goal of $1000.

Our next PTO meeting is one of our evening meetings: Wednesday, March 15, at 6pm in our school library. With the Soiree over, we move onto our other big end-of-the-year events to plan, the Walk/Jog/Roll-a-thon and International Night. We hope to see you there!
News and Updates
  • Registration for incoming Kindergarten students from the Solomon neighborhood boundaries (click here to see our boundaries) will start March 28-30 from 9:30-2:30 in the main office. Please bring your child's birth certificate and 2 proofs of address (no cell phone bills though). If you intend to send your child to Solomon for the first time in the 2017-2018 school year and you reside in the neighborhood, please stop by the main office during these times, or call the main office to arrange a different time. Registration for out-of-neighborhood sibling and lottery applicants will take place after Spring Break.

  • Registration materials for the Spring CPS after-school sports league, which can also be found here, must be turned into the main office no later than March 10. Sports included are Girls Soccer and Boys Track in grades 5-8. Get those applications in so that we can field multiple teams of Cougars!
  • With Chicago being a sanctuary city for immigrants, the district has given guidance to principals to assist us in procedures for protecting our students. To see the district's letter to stakeholders regarding the district policy, click here. From the magazine Teaching Tolerance, I'd recommend everyone interested in learning about immigrant students and school policy read this for some perspective about the work that we do.
The Trials of Alice in Wonderland
Tickets are available for the March 4 (3pm) performance of The Trials of Alice in Wonderland in the Solomon gymnasium. Please fill out the attached form and return with the payment to the main office. Our actors are excited to present their hard work to the Solomon community, so be sure to attend!

Chicago Enrichment Programs
Registration for before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming.
Don't miss these upcoming events!

March 4: The Trials of Alice in Wonderland performance

March 10: 3rd Quarter Progress Reports distributed

March 14: LSC meeting, 5:30 (library)
Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (February 2017 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!
What you may have missed this week...
On Wednesday, our 8th graders and Ms. Liu learned about immigration, industrialization, and social reform in 19th century Chicago by visiting the Jane Addams' Hull House on the UIC campus.
To celebrate both Music in our Schools and African American History months, Ms. Stirling invited performers to teach our students school-wide about the blues.
Our 5th/6th Boys Basketball team tipping off against Clinton Elementary on Saturday at Mather HS.
Congratulations to Coach Powers and our 5th/6th Boys Basketball team for a successful first season!
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
Questions or concerns? Please feel free to reach me at any time--email me at crgamble@cps.edu or call me at (773) 534-5226 (school) or (773) 805-0844 (cell).

If you know of someone who hasn't received this email but would like to be on the distribution list, fill out this form.

Enjoy your weekend,
