Solomon Principal Newsletter: December 2, 2016
Dear Parents and Community Members--

Holiday season is upon us, and we have a lot of exciting events this month, including our annual Winter Concert at Solomon on Friday, December 16, at 6pm. Additionally, our Student Council has started their annual Toys for Tots Drive. Students and parents can drop off new, unwrapped toys for all the girls and boys to our main office between November 30 and December 16. Thanks in advance for supporting our community and our Student Council in their efforts!
In other news...

  • Holiday Shop is coming up next week! Students and parents can do some holiday shopping, with proceeds benefiting Solomon, on Tuesday and Wednesday during school hours. The shop will stay open on Tuesday afternoon until 6pm for you after-school shoppers. If you are interested in signing up to volunteer for event, click here.
  • Students in grades 3-8 will be taking their middle of the year NWEA MAP assessments the weeks of December 12 and December 19. Primary grade students will take their NWEA MPG Math assessments once we return in January. Teachers are able to use this assessment to review their current instructional groupings and make wise decisions about how best to support group of students, as well as see how far students are progressing towards their goals so far this year.
  • Just a friendly reminder from our PTO: As you do any winter cleaning, be sure to keep shoes that you would like to donate. For the third year, we will be collecting donated shoes at Solomon, starting later in the winter. The funds raised from this fundraiser would go towards the efforts of our Solomon PTO.
  • Auditions for our Winter Play, Alice in Wonderland, will be on December 15, with practice beginning in January. If you are interested, please return this form to the main office as soon as you can. We are still looking for an upper grade student or two to join the cast, so please see me if you are interested.
Parent Teacher Organization News
A couple of highlights to share about upcoming PTO events:
  • We are excited to announce that we have a new PTO fundraiser scheduled at Five Below (any Chicago location) for the entire month of December. Please bring in the flier attached so that a portion of the proceeds come back to Solomon's PTO.

  • Thanks to all that attended our restaurant give-back day at Candlelite Chicago on November 20. We raised $225 for Solomon. Please be sure to go back and visit often!
  • Our other upcoming PTO fundraiser is scheduled for December 16 at Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store (6469 N. Lincoln). Bring this flier to have a portion of proceeds come back to Solomon's PTO.

  • Our next meeting is scheduled for December 21 at 9:30am in the school lunchroom.

  • Be sure to LIKE the Solomon School PTO on Facebook to get current information and reminders.

CPS Budget Update
Yesterday, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 2822, which provides $215 million to Chicago in FY 2017. This action jeopardizes the funding of Chicago Public Schools, including Solomon Elementary, moving forward. Please see this letter from the district on how you can respond.

Before and After-School Programming
Registration for other before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming. We are very excited that CEP is hosting its first Lego Architecture workshop for students next Tuesday and Wednesday (December 6 and 7) after school. We hope to be able to host many more events like this moving forward!
Pennies Fundraiser
We will be collecting pennies and loose change in the main office all year so that we can purchase these new, environmentally-conscious drinking fountains, with a goal of having them installed by the end of the year.

As of November 17, we have raised $175.66 towards our goal. Additionally, I'm excited to announce that the PTO will match the funds raised--meaning, when we have raised enough for one drinking fountain (approximately $1100), the PTO will be paying for the second one. Thank you to all parents, teachers, and community members for your generosity, and keep those pennies (and dollars!) coming!
Applications for 2017-2018 School Year

FINAL REMINDER for families that do not reside in our neighborhood boundaries and would like their child to attend Solomon as a new student starting in the 2017-2018 school year:

Families that would like to apply for any open seats at Solomon should complete the online or paper application by December 9, 2016, at 11:59 p.m.  This is especially important for siblings, since you must have an application for the child that is not a Solomon student.  Make sure to note on the application that you have a child currently enrolled at Solomon.

We do not currently know how many seats will be open for next year, but you must have an application on file to be considered. Prospective students are placed in a random list by the Office of Access and Enrollment in CPS. That list is then shared with Solomon in March, and then Ms. Smith and I go down the list until all of the open seats are filled. Due to students moving in and out of the neighborhood, we may be calling families from the list right up until school begins.

Don't miss these upcoming events!

December 13: Local School Council meeting (5:30, library)

December 16: Winter Concert (6:00, gym)

December 23: Last day of school before Winter Break

January 9, 2017: Return from Winter Break
Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (December 2016 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!
Celebrations from this week!
