Solomon Principal Newsletter: December 16, 2016
Dear Parents and Community Members--

We were so proud to showcase our students and their talents at the Winter Concert (see pictures below). It really takes a village to make an event like this happen. A big shout-out to Ms. Stirling for the months of planning and the instruction to the students that makes the magic happen. So many volunteers and teachers behind the scenes contributed to the details of the event, too many to name, so I would like to thank them collectively for their efforts. As one of our teachers said, it is what we do for the kids!

In addition to the winter cheer that was spread on Friday night, you may have also seen the "save-the-date" for next year's Solomon Soiree: February 24, 2017. It will be on a Friday night this year, so get your baby-sitting in advance for a chance to connect with other parents in the community and raise funds for Solomon. Last year was a tremendous success--over $10,000 raised and at least that many laughs over the course of the evening!--so make your plans to be at this year's Soiree. More information to come soon.
Winter Basketball Update
We were unfortunately unable to get enough students to field a 5th/6th girls, 7th/8th boys, and 7th/8th girls basketball team this year. Thank you to all that applied, and hopefully we will be able to get greater enrollment for spring sports this year. Parent notification to those students went home in backpacks this week.

We will be able to field a 5th/6th grade boys basketball team, though, which is exciting news. Detailed information, including the practice schedule, will be released next week. The game schedule has not been released, yet, but our games will be down the road at Mather HS, competing against local elementary schools such as Peterson, Sauganash, and Stone. Go Cougars!

If staff, parents, or community members want to coach, you should apply as soon as possible on the Chicago Park District website.

For those of you that want your child to play basketball with our partners from Hollywood Park (separate and apart from the CPS league), we will be resuming the program that we started last year the week of January 9, 2017. On Mondays (starting 1/9/2017), boys and girls in grades 5-8 will be able to participate in a recreational class at Solomon led by Coach MacDonald. Boys in girls in grades 1-4 will have their class on Wednesdays (starting 1/11/2017). Each class will go from 4-5:30pm. There is $7 fee for the students in 1st-4th grades (total, not per class), and the class for students in 5th-8th grades is free. No advanced sign-up required--just show up at the first class! These classes with Hollywood Park will last until early March.

  • I would like to give a huge "thank you" to Ms. Alysa Clark, mother of Jackson (5th grade), for her volunteer efforts. Through her photography company, she provided pictures of our staff to add to our website. Check it out at http://solomon.cps.edu/directory.html. Thanks, Alysa!
  • Thank you for contributing to our Toys for Tots Drive. Our Student Council collected two large boxes full of new, unwrapped toys to donate to those in need. Way to go!
  • Did you know that the Chicago Public Libraries in our neighborhood (Northtown at 6435 N. California is our closest one) offer after-school homework help for students? Find out more here!
Fonseca Martial Arts Winter Sign-Up
Parents can now sign up their students in grades K-6 for the winter term morning martial arts classes with Fonseca Martial Arts. Classes start on January 10 and continue through April 6. Please register by January 6, 2017, at their website.
Parent Teacher Organization News
A couple of highlights to share about upcoming PTO events:
  • From the looks of the picture, Oberweis was a hit, even on a snowy evening! Thank you to all who showed up for a celebratory scoop, with proceeds going towards our Solomon PTO.
  • We are excited to announce that we have a new PTO fundraiser scheduled at Five Below (any Chicago location) for the entire month of December. Please bring in the flier attached so that a portion of the proceeds come back to Solomon's PTO.

  • For everyone clearing out your closets--this year's shoe drive will be coming soon! Don't donate those old shoes yet!

  • Our next meeting is scheduled for December 21 at 9:30am in the school lunchroom.

  • Be sure to LIKE the Solomon School PTO on Facebook to get current information and reminders.
Chicago Enrichment Programs
Registration for before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming. CEP is looking to add more enrichment programming in January, so keep an eye out in the newsletter and their website for updates!
CPS Budget Update
Recently, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 2822, which provides $215 million to Chicago in FY 2017. This action jeopardizes the funding of Chicago Public Schools, including Solomon Elementary, moving forward. Please see this letter from the district on how you can respond.

Don't miss these upcoming events!
December 22: Upper grade winter concerts at Felician Sisters Convent (morning) and North Park Village (afternoon)

December 23: Last day of school before Winter Break; Student Council Dance 1-3:30pm

January 9, 2017: Return from Winter Break

January 10: Local School Council meeting, 5:30pm
Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (December 2016 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!
Celebrations from this week!
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
Questions or concerns? Please feel free to reach me at any time--email me at crgamble@cps.edu or call me at (773) 534-5226 (school) or (773) 805-0844 (cell).
