The second of three "Back to School" and start of the year bulletins from Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!

Solomon Principal Newsletter: August 25, 2016
Thank you to all that attended the Back to School Bash at Albany Park Multicultural Academy this past Monday. It was a fun day for students that attended, and it was a good opportunity to get supplies and forms to start off the school year.

If you haven't registered your new student at Solomon, please do so in our main office (daily from 9am-4pm) at your earliest convenience. This helps us to know exactly how many students will be in the seats on the first day and obtain the materials we need to best meet the needs of each child.
Early Bird Day/Community Picnic
Friday, September 2, 3-5pm

Early Bird Day gives you the ability to come to Solomon before school starts, checking off some of those important back-to-school tasks.

Come to school any time between 3-5pm to complete forms, join our PTO, pay fees, donate gently-used Solomon spirit wear, meet some of our external partners, and drop off school supplies.

Our PTO will be hosting an ice cream social on the playground to give students, parents, and the community the opportunity to re-connect after a fun summer. Use this opportunity to sign up as a PTO member, which will include some new perks this year, including Solomon decals for your car and a parent directory.

PK to 8th grade students are invited to visit classrooms, greet teachers, and meet their new classmates from 3-4pm.

Welcome to Solomon, Ms. Richard!

We are excited to welcome Ms. Andrea Richard as our new Early Childhood Special Education teacher in Room 106. Ms. Richard comes to us with extensive experience working with young learners at the Rush University Medical School campus and the University of Chicago Lab School. This past summer, she enjoyed traveling through Europe as she readied herself to join Chicago Public Schools. She welcomes all parents of students in the Early Childhood Special Education classroom to stop by and say hi during the Early Bird Day on September 2. Welcome to the team!
Attendance Policy
We have added a couple of additional items to the parent/student handbook regarding visitation and volunteer policies at Solomon, for everyone's reference.

I also want to take this opportunity to remind parents about our attendance policy at Solomon. We at Solomon ask that students returning from absences have a written note from a parent or guardian. The district only recognizes illness, observance of religious holiday, death in the immediate family, or a family emergency as excused absences; all other absences are recognized as unexcused absences. Parents are also welcome to call into the main office (773-534-5226) the morning of an absence to let the teacher know. All families will receive a robo-call from the district when there is an absence; students arriving late may receive this robo-call as well.

Here is the link to a district document for families regarding attendancehttp://cps.edu/AttendanceAndTruancy/Documents/ParentHandout_English.pdf

September 13: Local School Council meeting, 5:30-6:30pm in the school library.

September 17: Save the date for our first Community Work Day at Solomon, times TBD. More information about the projects available and a sign-up sheet for participating will be provided in the next newsletter.

September 20: Curriculum Night, 6-8pm in gymnasium and classrooms. Meet your child's teachers, learn about instructional and homework plans for the school year, and learn how you can partner with each teacher to ensure your child's success this year. This year we are asking that this is child-free event so that teachers and parents can have rich discussions about the school year. Thanks for your cooperation.

Right At School

Looking to register for before (7:30-9am) or after school (4-6pm) childcare and enrichment at Solomon? Our partners from Right At School offer that programming onsite at Solomon, with convenient drop-off and pick-up. For information about pricing and registering for programming, visit their website.

The North River Commission, our community partner in the neighborhood, has created a survey for teachers, principals, parents, and community members regarding educational needs and priorities in the area. The NRC represents 26 different schools, and it wants to hear your thoughts on how we can support public schools on issues such as adequate funding and out-of-school enrichment opportunities in the area. Take the NRC Education survey here to be heard. Thanks!

Also, keep an eye out an announcement about the annual Peterson Park Improvement Association's State of the Community presentation, hosted at Solomon, later this fall!

Fonseca Martial Arts

Registration is now open for our Solomon Morning Karate Club, hosted by our partners at Fonseca Martial Arts. This class is open to all students between K-5th grade, regardless of skill level. Lead Testing Update: We are happy to announce that positive lead test from earlier in the summer has been addressed and remediated. The re-test results show that the fixture in the cafeteria is now well below the action level, indicating that it is safe for use by students and staff. The full results of our water samples, including information on the successful re-test, can be found online at here.
Less than two weeks until the first day of school--we are all excited and getting the building ready!
