Solomon Principal Newsletter: April 28, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

We want to wish good luck to our 8th graders that are advancing on the state history fair competition in Springfield on May 4. Solomon's entries are:
  • Shaliha G., Olivia I., and Maggie P. for "The Chicago Women's Liberty Union (CWLU): Women Taking a Stand:
  • Simran P., Sylvie T., and Donya Y. for "The Spoken Word of Harriet Monroe"
Good luck, Cougars!

News and Updates
  • Yesterday was the final day for our two exemplary student teachers, Ms. Flink in Kindergarten and Ms. Nixon in 4th grade. We have all been impressed with how quickly they got to know our students and how they devoted themselves to improving their craft. They will be great educators, and we will miss them!

  • Be sure to go to the bottom of the email to see some pictures from our students at yesterday's Opening Ceremonies for this year's Special Olympics. Events continue this week, and we have nearly 2 dozen of our students in grades 3-8 participating. Good luck to our athletes and coaches, Ms. Howsam and Ms. Sak, this week. Also, a big thank you to Ms. Montano for provoking the Solomon Special Olympics banner!

  • This year's Dancing with the Solomon Stars event is next week, on May 5 at 6:30pm in our gymnasium. This year, thanks to the fundraising efforts of our PTO, tickets are free. That said, there are limited numbers of tickets available to see the dances our 3rd-8th graders have prepared with the support of Dancing With Class, so be sure to RSVP in advance. A copy of the document that went home in backpacks last week can also be found here
  • Parents interested in having their child(ren) attend pre-school at Solomon for the 2017-2018 school year can apply online starting May 15th at www.chicagoearlylearning.org.

  • Last yesterday, the district issued a press release, found here, stating that the school year will continue as scheduled through June 20. Needless to say, we are relieved and look forward to focusing on our excited end-of-the-year activities.

My Voice, My School Survey for Parents
The My Voice, My School survey for parents is only open for two more days, closing after April 30. The survey can be found at www.cps.edu/parent_survey, where you can access it in multiple languages (including Arabic, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese, among others), and responses are anonymous. Hard copies of the survey are available at school, if you prefer those.

By giving 10-15 minutes of your time, you can significantly improve the education of your children. Also, the results from the My Voice, My School Parent Survey contribute to the “grade” given to Solomon, in the form of our SQRP rating.
WJR 2017: Just Move It!

Walk-Jog-Roll-a-Thon is only 2 weeks away! This annual event highlights our commitment to equity, health, and wellness for all of our students through movement and exercise.

With this being the 5th anniversary for WJR, we invite you to contribute in any number of ways. Please see the attached fliers for more information.

This year's fundraising goes towards supporting our arts enrichment programming, including the wonderful student art that you saw highlighted at the Art Fair during Report Card Pick-up Day and the dance programs noted in this newsletter. Your contributions help us to sustain arts enrichment that we would not be able to provide without your help. Thank you!

Most Likely to Succeed Film Screening
Parents, community members, and students in 6th-8th grades are invited to attend a film screening of Most Likely to Succeed at Palmer Elementary (5051 N. Kenneth) on Monday, May 22, at 6pm. This event, jointly-hosted by schools in our community, including Solomon, and the North River Commission, highlights the work ahead as we prepare our students for 21st century learning.

Parent Teacher Organization Updates

Our shoe drive is coming to a close, and we have reached our goal of 100 bags of shoes (and then some!) This undertaking was a huge commitment for our PTO leadership, as well as other volunteers who helped to collect, drop off, and bag. We couldn't have done it without you! Your support means over $1000 to support programming at Solomon!

Our next PTO meeting is April 26 at 9:15am in our lunchroom. This is the last meeting before WJR, so there will be a lot to plan and discuss!

Don't forget that the PTO supports a number of upcoming Solomon events:
  • Walk-Jog-Roll-a-thon: May 12
  • International Night: June 2
  • Kindergarten Tea: June 7
And, of course, see these tasty fundraisers that we have coming up in the next two months. A big thank you to Lou Malnati's and Chipotle for supporting Solomon, so be sure to purchase food on the night of these restaurant give-backs!

Fonseca Martial Arts registration
Registration is open for the spring term that started on Tuesday, April 18, and continues through Thursday, June 15. See the attached flier on registration information for the spring term. Even if you haven't participated before, this is a great program for teaching balance and fitness. All are welcome!

Chicago Enrichment Programs
Registration for before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming.
Don't miss these upcoming events!
May 9: Seal of Biliteracy Assessment (selected students in 5th and 8th grades only)

May 9: LSC meeting, 5:30 (library)

May 15: NWEA Spring Assessment window opens
Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (May 2017 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (www.solomon.cps.edu), which is updated in real time!
In case you missed it: Highlights from the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics...
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
Questions or concerns? Please feel free to reach me at any time--email me at crgamble@cps.edu or call me at (773) 534-5226 (school) or (773) 805-0844 (cell).
